Page 3 of 6 Ms. Hyusmenova, as a politician, do you like the expression “circles of companies?” Regretfully, the years of transition in Bulgaria were characterized by the difficult establishment of parliamentary democracy and a new type of statesmanship. The political power of totalitarianism has managed to transform itself to a certain extent into an economic one and thus to find its place in the shadow and later, in the regular part of the country’s socio-political life. Moreover, an interdependency between capital and politics is easy to form as they have their resources to meet their different interests. This also happens in other countries, with advanced democracy. The difference is that they have mechanisms which narrow the field of such exchangeable accommodation. In Bulgaria, the sooner a law on lobbyism is passed, the more checks of the politicians’ possessions are made and transparency is tolerated, the lower the possibility of unlawful impact.
AS an MEP, are you personally bothered with anything as regards the MRF image?
Like all other parties, the MRF is part of the socio-political life of transition. Some of these other parties we even do not remember any more, others are disappearing before our eyes. During this period, influential people have declared their anti-MRF feelings. Those whom we haven’t been accommodating have been defaming us. Since the public memory is not long, the concrete occasion is forgotten, but negativism is accumulated. I am not saying that the MRF has no deficiencies. Nobody is perfect. But biased eyes cannot see what we have been doing – the MRF is constantly changing. We are changing not only in words. Whatever we have stated can be witnessed in our actions. The explanation is simple: No party can exist unless it takes into account the changed realities. In this sense, the MRF should always work to improve its image. If we are not up to the demands, no force on earth can take the electorate to the voting box. I believe the key to the MRF power is that our action has begun with the first whiff of change.
