MEP Filiz Hyusmenova Meetings in the Silistra Region |
MEP Filiz Hyusmenova visited the Silistra region last week. According to the Regulations of the European Parliament, its members should have extra-parliamentary activities almost every month. They can open reception offices, popularize EP work, and be useful to citizens. In the Silistra area F. Hyusmenova distributed the “Euro Calendar” publication that was printed by her initiative. Structured like an interview, it tells about the European Parliament, about the political group whose member she is – the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe – their priorities, their campaigns for patients’ rights, for the changes in climate and people trafficking. On several pages Filiz Hyusmenova tells about her major accomplishments as a MEP and Bulgarian MP. The MEP also distributed diaries with information about the European Union, published with the assistance of European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva, to 8th- and 9th-grade students from four Silistra schools. Hyusmenova’s visit coincided with the Francophone Day, the first day of spring and the International Day against Racial Discrimination. On the occasion of the former, Hyusmenova, a Francophone herself, made a donation to the Partenii Pavlovich library in Silistra. She donated 50 books which will be particularly valued by lovers of French poetry and French-speaking patrons. Patrons will be able to read the book “Le Voyage” by Charles Baudelaire in French and Bulgarian, and the book of poems by young Bulgarian writer Raina Ivanova. At the festivities held on the occasion of the first day of spring, F. Hyusmenova donated toys, balls, encyclopedias, teaching materials and a TV set to two kindergartens and a school. Teachers voiced they apprehension that some education reforms might lead to depopulation of small localities. At the end of the week, on the International Day against Racial Discrimination, winners of the essay contest “Tell Me Who You Are, Understand the Other!” in Silistra were awarded on behalf of the MEP. The contest was declared by Filiz Hyusmenova at the end of January on the occasion of the European year of Intercultural Dialogue. “This year will help popularize cultural uniqueness and differences in a way that stimulates understanding of the need of diversity,” Hyusmenova believes. Eight participants were given awards. Elser Sevgin, 6th grade, and Venetian Petrov, 11th grade at the Yurii Gagarin School are winners in the two age groups. Contest participants proved that young people are not indifferent to problems of communication and coexistence of different ethnic groups, religions, and cultures.
