The Project in Support of Patients with MS is being implemented upon the suggestion of MEP Filiz Hyusmenova. It is funded by the Political Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) to the European Parliament, as part of their campaign for protection of patients’ rights. The supported the compilation, publishing and distribution of a 48-page booklet in a circulation of 1000 copies, as well as 500 CDs. The product has already been delivered to the three leading MS offices in the capital. They are located at Alexandrovska Hospital, Sveti Naum Hospital, and Tsaritsa Joanna Hospital, and will be handed out free of charge to the patients or their relatives during examinations and consultations at the MS offices or at admission to the hospital for treatment. The creator of the booklet ‘In Support of the Patients Diagnosed with MS’ is Dessislava Rayanova, a patient diagnosed with MS 5 years ago. She compiled comprehensive information related to the lives of people affected by this disease, owing to her personal experience. Her desire is to facilitate the lives of people with MS through ensuring direct access to any important information relevant to the patients and their families. ‘In Support of the Patients Diagnosed with MS’ contains information on the medical procedures, treatment options, duties of the GPs and treating neurologists, opportunities for taxation relieves, application procedures for expensive medication aid, funded by the National Health Fund. A significant part of it is socially oriented – it explains the procedures for applying before a Disability Expert Medical Committee, how does the National Social Security Institute proceed in cases of retirement due to sickness, what are the rights of people with disabilities according to the Bulgarian legislation, what are the opportunities for rehabilitation and training. The websites of the main institutions are listed, as well as the major acts and regulations related to people with disabilities. An additional circulation of 3000 copies will be printed with the help of Bayer Schering within the Bayer Schering Academy Project. The additional copies will be distributed among the remaining 4 MS offices in the country, as well as among leading neurologists. There are approximately 5000 people diagnosed with MS in Bulgaria. The disease affects people at an active age, mainly between 20 and 40 years old. MS affects the functioning of the central nervous system, and often leads to significant disability.

The residents of Sofia preferred to seek the booklet directly from the MS offices at Alexandrovska Hospital, Sveti Naum Hospital, and Tsaritsa Joanna Hospital. Significant part of those who requested the booklet reside in the country and they appreciate the option to have it delivered straight to their homes. ‘I am glad that we are able to help those people, and I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who assists us,’ stated MEP Filiz Hyusmenova.
