Tell Me Who You Are, Understand the Others |
|
On January 22 2008, MEP Filiz Hyusmenova opened an essay contest “Tell Me Who You Are, Understand the Others” in Silistra, Dulovo and Glavinitsa. The MEP dedicated this event to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue that officially started in Ljubljana on January 8 2008.
The contest is open for students of 8th-12th grade, divided into two age groups, who will be writing on the subject for a month. Four prizes – will be given within each age group. This initiative has two major goals: to spread the information that the European Commission has declared 2008 as the Year of Intercultural Dialogue, and to provoke young people to think about the problems of understanding, communication, and coexistence of different ethnic groups, religions and cultures.
Filiz Hyusmenova believes that they Year of Intercultural Dialogue is an occasion to popularize both cultural uniqueness and differences but in such a way that will stimulate the understanding of a need of diversity. According to her, European citizens must be proud of their nations’ roots and draw from there strength for a joint present and future. The MEP will also open this contest in other municipalities of Bulgaria populated by mixed ethnic groups in order to encourage good relations of respect and tolerance.
