The Name of the European Monetary Unit – Euro

The MEP Filiz Hyusmenova raised several questions before the European Commission regarding the transliteration in Bulgarian language of the name of the European currency “Euro.” She symbolically deposited her questions to the European Parliament on the date Europe celebrates as the Day of Language Diversity, since this day is intended to not only encourage studying of foreign languages but also to support recognizing the significance of every language in the EU.

Filiz Hyusmenova asked the Commission whether it would be appropriate that the Euro be spelled ‘Evro’ in Bulgarian language, since this is provided for in the Agreement on the Accession of Bulgaria to the European Union. She also asked whether it is acceptable that the European Central Bank requires from Bulgaria to transliterate the Euro in Bulgarian as ‘Euro’, whereas the European Union works towards encouraging the multiple languages through all its policies.
A month ago Filiz Hyusmenova signed the petition by Bulgarian citizens for preserving the linguistic form ‘EVRO’ in Cyrillic as a title for the European currency. As of today, 3865 people have signed the petition. The questions to the European Commission, which has the role of protecting the agreements of the European Union, are a follow-up to this campaign. According to the MEP Filiz Hyusmenova, the issue about the title of the Euro concerns the exercising of our democratic rights as citizens of Europe, including our relations with the institutions of the European Union.
